Have you noticed many of our cats are missing a little piece of their ear? This is known as ear-tipping! Our partners at Kingston Animal Rescue, in tandem with Support Wolfe Island Friends of Ferals and Kingston West Veterinary Hospital have been filling the cafe with cats who were formerly either strays or part of feral colonies on Wolfe Island. As a measure of population control, many ferals need to be trapped and then they go to the clinic to be spayed or neutered. While they're under anaesthetic, a piece of their ear is removed to identify that they've been fixed. This way, they don't have to be trapped or checked again. So why aren't they tagged or tattooed instead of having a piece of their ear removed? Well, tattoos aren't easily spotted, and would require the cat to still be trapped and inspected (which can be quite traumatic) and tags can get caught on twigs and branches in the outdoors, which is obviously problematic for feral cats that may have to remain outside. Ear-tipping is easily spotted, heals quickly and can even be used to identify the sex of the cat based on which ear is tipped. Now you know!
